Types of Classes

Yoga classes at Yoga Sanga

  • The focus of our Yoga teaching recognises that we are all different.
  • We teach a range of Yoga practices where the needs of each person are taken into account, to offer the best possible yoga practice for each person. This is known as the viniyoga of yoga.
  • One of the ways that we achieve this is by keeping our classes small (up to 15 students) so that individual attention can be provided and the interaction with the teacher is possible.
  • We also offer individual lessons for the development of personally designed practices.
  • As well as the challenge that Yoga practice can bring, we foster an atmosphere of acceptance, support and friendliness.
  • Based on the ethical principals of Yoga.

These are six-week introductory courses for beginners, and those who have not been doing Yoga for some time and wish to get back into it. Some of the basic Yoga postures are taught, including principles of movement and breath, vinyasa krama (sequences of postures), and relaxation.

Although designed for beginners, it may still be challenging, in a way that is safe, effective and avoids strain and injury. You will begin to have an understanding of the basics, and, most importantly, begin to feel great!!!

Once you have completed a Beginners’ Course, you are welcome to continue with further courses at the beginners level or join any of the general classes.

General Classes

These classes are for those who have at least some experience of the basics of Yoga postures and movement with breath awareness.

The focus of the classes is mainly on the Yoga postures (asanas), which help bring health, strength and flexibility in the body. This also fosters focus of the mind and greater self-awareness. Detailed instruction is given on how to do each of the postures correctly, as well how to modify each of them for individual needs. Yoga breathing is taught in conjunction with movement in the postures, and a variety of flowing sequences of postures are developed and practiced. Classes generally include deep relaxation.

Intermediate Level Classes

These classes offer a range of practices for those who are more experienced with Yoga. “Intermediate” means a number of things, including more challenging or more subtle practices. This may include:

  • more challenging or difficult postures
  • more dynamic and extended sequences of postures
  • variety of ways in which the breath is used with the postures
  • pranayama practices
  • use of sound, chanting and visualisations

These classes are open to anyone with some experience in Yoga, who are looking for a broader range of Yoga practice than offered in most general or primary series classes. Basic knowledge and experience of modifying practices for your own individual needs is required.

Pregnancy Classes

Many women come to yoga for the first time during pregnancy. Understandably, most are not interested in overly adventurous postures and welcome their introduction to carefully constructed, safe and nurturing practices. Others with more experience will sense the need to modify their practice and to focus on what is most important during this special time.

The ancient tradition of yoga offers very clear guidance on preparing the body, breath and mind for birth and beyond. If you are new to yoga we recommend that you contact us at the beginning of your second trimester, from around 14 weeks onwards. Put aside your busy life to give the benefits of yoga to yourtself and your growing baby. Nothing special is required to begin

Pregnancy yoga classes are specifically designed to benefit women during pregnancy and assist in the preparation for birth and the postnatal period. The emphasis during the classes will allow women to learn and benefit from various Yoga practices such as breathing exercises (pranayama), postures (asana) and deep relaxation. The teachers will tailor the yoga practices according to the stages of pregnancy, with a focus on individual needs. All you need to is an ability to breathe and a preparedness to find a gentle and intimate space within the practice specially devised for mother and her unborn child

The class is suitable for babies up to crawling age and provides a great atmosphere to meet some other new parents.

Private lessons and Yoga therapy

As well as group classes, a great way to enjoy the benefits of Yoga is through personally designed Yoga practices. This is best done in private lessons, where a yoga practice is developed for your individual needs. These practices can then be done regularly in the comfort and convenience of your own home, or wherever you are travelling.
